History

Akva was founded in the autumn of 1981.

The first store opened in Aarhus, followed by another in Copenhagen before establishing production in the small railway town of Ry in 1986.

Here, Akva began exploring the technical requirements for manufacturing advanced waterbed technology. Years have been dedicated to perfecting the welding process and researching the raw material for water mattresses—soft PVC—and in 2001, Akva became the first waterbed manufacturer to introduce phthalate-free water mattresses.

Since then, Akva has expanded the reach of water-based bed systems into other sectors. The integration of water and sound, in particular, has demonstrated proven effects in a wide range of therapeutic treatments.

In 2017, the second generation joined the company, continuing the vision of reconnecting humans with their primal element.

Production

The Akva factory was built in 1986. Since then, the place has evolved into a highly specialiced waterbed manufacturing facility, including everything from carpentry and upholstery to foam, sewing and welding departments.

Expertise and knowledge have grown from each section, echoing a deep understanding of rest and the demands it places on contemporary bed systems. Akva waterbeds are shaped from this particular understanding.

A dialogic process, merging natural materials, and technical engineering to constitute the dogmas of a water-based sleep technology.

Responsibility

For Akva, acting responsibly means creating products that support human rest while taking essential environmental considerations into account. Each waterbed is thoughtfully designed, not only to last, but to retain their quality over time.

Using water as the foundation of the products, waterbeds are constructed around a natural material whose properties do not diminish over time. The company has made this value of permanence a core tenet of its design development and practices. Applied to the structural principles of the beds, this has encouraged Akva to incorporate maintenance considerations into every component.

Consequently, Akva constructions allow for disassembly and replacement of individual parts, to enable development of quality that last.
